Among the many wonderful responses I got to this very short story, was an email from a Northern Kentucky University film student named Kyle Breitenstein. He asked if he could use my story for his final project. This is what he did.

I write about the intersection of love and everything else at A Human Thing.
At the wonderful Fear of Writing blog, my ongoing series, j’s Journey, chronicles the ups and downs of writing for publication.
I loosely interpret the word “travel” on the travel blog, Milliver’s Travels.
On A Month Of Sundays, I take pictures and play with my best friend.

Great story. I want more. Have you published others?
alster, thank you! yes, i have – in literary journals (you know, the ones that only other writers read). aiming for bigger things now. think good thoughts. (thanks so much for commenting. i’m ridiculously giddy now.)
Having read this story, and a number of your posts, it’s clear to me that you are the real deal — a truly gifted writer. Can’t wait to read your novel.
OK, so I am going back to read all your posts on Zebra Sounds to hear all about how you got to now.
This story is so beautiful, it made me cry. You are an amazing writer.
Jane, battling frustration, fear and fatigue these days, you just reminded me why I write. Thank you so much for this!
I recently installed the program needed to see your short story. It’s amazing, Judy, really. Poignant and distinct, unlike anything I’ve ever read in its observations, tone, and vignetted tragedy and beauty.
I really look forward to reading more from you.
BR, You have no idea (well, actually, you do) how much it means to hear that. Thank you for taking the time to write it!
Even though it’s hard to define a good writer with just one definition, and they’re hard to find, I can only say now: you are a very gifted writer!
Your approach on the subject was amazing, I loved it! Can’t wait for your book to come out, hope I’ll be able to buy it from here… :)
Estrella, Thank you so much for reading it, and for taking the time to comment! Yes, it is time to focus on getting the book out there. Can’t run the race and then freeze just before the finish line! Stay tuned for more news and information!
I just read this story. Amazing. And in second person too! Your writing is beautiful. But why should I be surprised?
Linda, Thank you! Sometimes 2nd person is fun. Felt right on that one. I keep meaning to add a J-Writes page to the blog so more of my work is available. This month for sure!
Very nice story and nice blog. May I blogroll you on my own? I’ve been left sort of like that and it recalled some things. For me. And also my little son sometimes remarking, Daddy, You said a bad word. Don’t do that! Cheers, thanks, -John
I love this story. One of the better pieces I’ve seen written in 2nd person/present tense. I’ve never attempted it and after just reading your post on fear and trying new things, I can see why you would be just the person to do it.
I tend to write in my comfort zone, but I will remember you and your well-done story whenever I decide to step out of it.
So thrilled that I stumbled upon you!
What a beautiful story. Thank you so much.
Oops, Mara and Anna’s comments just made me notice I’m behind on this page.
Thank you both, and John and Trisha too. I’ve got such a big, goofy smile right now. (Everyone thinks I put something in this coffee.)
I comment only to further encourage the notion that you are a delightful gift to the world of writing and literature and to thank you for sharing. Thank you for verbalizing the fleeting thought-lets that our subconscious tends to filter and for making a few more people feel a little less lonely, having found a bit more of themselves and a bit of all of us in the process through your voice.
Reynard, Wow. Thank you so much for that.
sorry about your dog! i know if i lost my dog (the real Raz) i’d be devastated!
I was just talking to someone about this. He never wants to have pets because they don’t live forever. I told him, “they’re worth the pain.” I still believe that. (Love the name Raz.)
I stumbled to your short story ‘Invisble’ about an hour ago and have since been reading all your blogs and ‘Zebra Sounds’ – I have nothing to say that hasn’t already been said but you are a truly fantastic writer. Your stories made me cry and your lists have made me laugh :). I’ve officially hopped on the band wagon and added you to my ‘favorites’
Wow! Thank you, Kathryn, for reading me and taking the time to write to me. You absolutely made me smile from the inside today.
i loved “invisible”! i stumbled upon it, too!
Thank you!
Oh, Judy. You’re truly wonderful. I really enjoyed reading this story.
Judy, the title story for your blog was gripping. I kept marveling at the way your imagination put this together. I had to read it compulsively. Couldn’t stop till I got to the end. More!
~ Milli
By the way, I keep seeing mentions of your story “Invisible.” Where do I find that one?
Milli, Wow! I’m floating! Thank you so much! Sadly, “Invisible” disappeared online when Isca folded and removed all their content. I am putting together (for real… it may be up this coming week), a j-writes page which will include a lot of my published (and maybe some unpublished) work. Invisible will be one of the first pieces I put up. Stay tuned!
Ya know, now that you mention it was on Isca, I may have already read it. I read one of your stories posted there and it was A-mazing! I’m pretty sure that was the one.
I’ll look forward to seeing your j-writes page.
And now you can! J-writes is up. I’m exhausted. That was hard. Let’s pop some bubbly!
J – Please ‘splain to me how you just put the page up but there are comments from 2009? I don’t get it.
I used the old “Why Zebra Sounds” page to create this one so I could keep the comments. (I didn’t want to lose all the encouragement.) ;-)
Whew! Thanks, I thought I was going to have to admit John was right about there being time travel. If there were then I would have to go back and NOT say it didn’t exist, but . . . whew, I’m glad it was just an webpage (trick).
I love the J-writes page :-) Such a wonderful idea; a home for wonderful writing
Thank you, Simon. *blush*
I have now read “Zebra Sounds,” “Invisible,” and “Then and Now” for the second or third or fourth time each and “Real Life” for the first time. I am sticking to my original plan of only two stories per day… okay it was originally one story per day. So I’m a little greedy. I am savoring the anticipation of the four stories left, especially since I don’t think I’ve read at least two of them yet. Thank you SO much for starting “j writes” ~ and we want your book!!!!!! I’ll be your publicist for the low, low price of one signed copy, how’s that? Or one hug. Love your writing! Love you! *BIG HUGS*
I can pay that! You’re hired!
Whoo hoo! I love that you posted more stories! Instead of “j writes” can we call it “j rocks”?
j ~ I’m very excited even at mere sight of your (added to) j-writes page. I’m here and about to read Invisible. But first I just had to see what people were saying on this comments page. I LOVE what Dani said about being your publicist for the price of one signed copy. Or one hug. Yeah! And I agree with Jane. We should call it “j rocks.”
