It’s Friday. Finally. This week has been a hard one for me, and I will not be sorry to see it go. On the bright side, I did collect some internet gems to share with you.
- I fell in love with this video, this girl, this poem. In. Love.
- How befitting that on my Five for Friday list, I include this site (which I can’t believe I didn’t know about) called Five Books. Every day an eminent writer, thinker, commentator, politician, academic chooses five books on their specialist subject. From chick lit to historical fiction to narrative nonfiction, from Einstein to Iraq to classical music. It’s all here. I’m giddy.
- And, variations on a theme, I also stumbled across Five Chapters, where, every week, a story is published in five parts, one each day. I will be reading this with my coffee.
- It is always fun to watch OK Go. Have you seen their Rube Goldberg Machine? (Thank you Tana Butler for tweeting this delight!)
- The wonderful and good-for-my-soul Hippiechick sent me this because she said it made her think of me. That makes me happier than I can express.

Speechless from that video. It’s just what I needed, when I needed it. I am also IN. LOVE. with her, her poem and her video. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for finding that! I’ll have to come back for the rest, my mind just got opened up in a really good way and I need to groove on it for a just a while.

I know. I absolutely love it. I’m actually working on a very short movie. I saw this and wanted to throw in the towel, knowing I don’t have the skills to pull it off. But then I remembered, I don’t have to do everything myself. Stay tuned.
A good five today. I had seen the video in #1, but was lovely seeing it again. #2 looks really cool. I bookmarked it so I can check it daily. *just have to remember to do it! 5 Chapters looks cool too.
I love the idea of having writers/experts pick books for me! And the 5 chapters will be fun. A story a week, guaranteed.
yay! Love them all! Thanks J for starting my Friday off right, as always. Love the poem, the video, the young woman, fabulous! I have bookmarked both sites – 5chapters is publishing Emma Straub’s next book in early 2011! Love love love the video of Rube Goldberg Machine! And the wall to erase your fears – what a great idea. This is a great 5 and reminds me that we don’t really have to grow up – not in the sad ways of being old and grumpy and closed off – we can be young and childish and creative forever. Yes I got that from your Friday 5. :o) xoxo Have a great weekend J!
WOW! If you got that, my work here is done. (Reminds me of how I got all that out of Chad’s seeing a dad on a unicycle. Amazing insight comes from the strangest places… like Zebra Sounds!) ;-)
Wonderful 5 things for Friday. Great video in #1. Admired the message, loved the black cat watching her dance, and wish I knew how to knit.
Ha! When I took up gardening last summer, I figured knitting was next. Why my mind links them is anyone’s guess! (My mom, who knits, but would rather taste test lint than garden, is no doubt shaking her head in despair.)
Wow. Just wow. Thank you for the pointer to that video – well, both of them really (the second one is great fun, the first one – great beauty).
And thank you for the Friday 5 – a great way to end the week.
KjM, My pleasure! I needed something beautiful (and inspiring) this week.
Wow J. what a great list, as always. The poem made me stop in my tracks.
LOVE her! I can’t get “be a testament” out of my head. I have always loved going to restaurant, movies and reading on benches by myself. I too have met tons of interesting people in my solitude. I never feel alone. That is why I moved to a house on a hill so I can see the city lights and am reminded that I am a community. I of course have my son, hubby encompassing me like a warm blanket, but I am also comfortable being a one.
I know many envision loneliness as the last not talked about thing – almost like a sin, a crime. Growing up as an only child for 10 “wonderful” years until my sisters came along might have something to do with my contrary point of view. Who knows, maybe it’s just me modeling my “Mary, Mary, quite contrary” label. My son is also an “only” who craves a fun-filled-friend social calendar. Currently he sees alone as a scary world, but he’s young. I wonder if wearing solitude feels more comfortable with age? or it just boils down to loving YOU the one.
Thanks for making me feel moments of peace today.
Mairi
I think there is definitely a difference between being alone and being lonely. For some people, they are the same, but they don’t have to be. I love your sentence about living on a hill, looking down at the lights, feeling you are a community. That is beautiful.
Good LORD. The rube goldberg machine was fantastic. Thank you for that. *grins ear to ear*
My kid made one in school that I thought was pretty cool, but this one may be a biiiiiiiit more elaborate.
Big Friday Hugs my lovely!!
I loved it too. I’ve never tried to make one. Hmmm…
Oh wow, I love the chalkboard … How therapeutic to write your fears and then see them wiped clean!
Also the video is amazing. Since last week I’ve watched it maybe five times. Lovely.
Great list as usual!
Me too! Isn’t that just an awesome idea? I thought about maybe doing a post where everyone could come comment with their fear and then, at the end of the day, I’d delete the whole thing – the post, their comments, all of it. I still might.
You should totally do that. For that one day we should all reply as anonymous so that no one knows who is saying what. I love the idea.
Ooo, I like the anonymous idea. I’d post a comment too… This is so going to happen.
I’m not big on erasing someone else’s fear, but I thought this image was one you could not live without:

Ha! I think I may have used that in a Caption This once. (So cute. Wish I looked that good in my diving gear!)
1. Me, too. In. love. I watched it twice. It just keeps getting better and better.
2. OH. Oh. Love this site. Bookmarked. I think there is no better way to see inside someone’s mind and heart than for you to tell me the books that have influenced you.
3. I have seen this site before and agree. Fabulous.
4. How fucking cool.
5. :::blush::::

1. Jinx. You owe me a glass of wine! (Yes, I’m cheating and not playing right, but we get to have wine, so we both win.)
2. Starting my list immediately.
3. I can’t believe I didn’t know about it! It’s awesome.
4. Right?
5. Awww.
