Best Laid Plans (and cool Friday stuff)

It is Friday… It is supposed to be the Friday before my big ocean dives this weekend but, as of this writing, my dive prospects look kind of grim. I went to the doctor Thursday because I haven’t been able to clear one of my ears, and it turns out I’ve got a “eustachian tube dysfunction.” Unfortunately, just like your tank, regulator, fins, mask… a working eustachian tube is required for diving.

When the doctor saw that I was about to cry (not really) (okay, yes, really), he offered to put together a Hail Mary regimen of decongestants, antihistamines and nose sprays. He said it was quackery based on old wives tales. I said if he did it for me, I would love him forever.

He did. I will. I’ll let you know what happens. I always do.

In the meantime, I have some very cool Friday stuff to share. ..

  1. Someone wants to kiss me, hold me and make tea for me. I know this because I have read (and adored, and bookmarked and printed out) the manifesto of encouragement from Danielle LaPorte.
  2. I’m not sure who I’m shamelessly promoting here, but the beautiful and sparkly Karen Schindler wrote the sweetest poem ever about me (wish you could see my big ridiculous smile), and the equally beautiful and sparkly Bryan Borland published it in a book of poetry titled Fag Hag –A Scandalous Chapbook of Fabulously-Codependent Poetry. Go see!
  3. If I were to capture the core of what I believe in a very short poem, it might be this one, by Robert Lee Brewer.
  4. This is cool, a children’s chorus singing one of my favorite songs. (Some of these kids are just born performers.)
  5. I love, love, love McSweeney’s open letters. ‘Nuff said.

And, I have a picture again today because one of my most favorite people in the whole world said she liked it and that’s good enough for me. Caption at will!

  1. caption: someone wants to hold me, kiss me, and make tea for me (once i become a prince.) :)

  2. On with the Prince theme:

“I’m partying like its 1999. Waho—What? Oh its supposed to be a lampshade?”

  3. 97,98,99, 100….. ready or not, here I come….
[I bet he hid on my head again. For some damn reason he always hides on my head]
    *sigh*

Thank you for the shout out my lovely j.
Bryan’s Chapbook is amazing and of course YOU’RE amazing, so the two things go wonderfully hand in hand don’t you think?

PS: You said Bryan and I were equally sparkly. Which, all things considered, may be a perfectly valid statement, but for the sake of full disclosure to your audience I do feel the need to point out that I have better legs.
    :0)

    • Thank you back! Your legs are legendary. I thought their perfection went without saying.

    • I haven’t seen your legs, Karen, but I’ll take j’s word for them. LOVED your poem! Don’t we all feel that way about j? You said it better than we could. Congratulations, dear!

    • Aww, sweetness! Thank you, Dani. And Karen says most things better than most people can. It’s her gift and her curse.

  4. (snail) “Does this frog make my butt look fat?”

  5. Oh good — this means it’s Friday! Yay!

    1) I saw this and immediately formed a girlcrush on Danielle La Porte. I saved it on my laptop and look at it often… including right now.

    2) I loved that poem and Karen’s ability to write with such ease.

    3) Yes… that was amazing. Reading it again and again to make sure I get it.

    4) Ha! Landslide is the first song I ever learned on the guitar. I also wanted my hair to be like Stevie’s but I never had enough hair spray.

    5) Bookmarking that site!

    caption:
Frog: I ask to be turned into a unicorn and this is what I get?

*fingers, toes, tongue, and ponytail — crossed*

    • I had Stevie’s hair in the mid/late seventies. Couldn’t sing like her, though. Or Janis Joplin. Maybe Tiny Tim, but I didn’t look like him. ;D

    • I still have Stevie Nicks hair. (I haven’t seen her recently. Bet she’s done something about it.)

  6. J!

So glad you get to go diving! And I hope this ear dysfunction goes away really soon.

Love the manifesto of encouragement! I think if I have to print this off, too, and stick it over my computer. And you got the honor of having someone write a poem about you! Luuuucky!

    Caption: “Oh, him? That’s Gary.”

    • Sadly, Eman, I didn’t get to go, which was a harder thing to accept than I thought it would be for a whole lot of reasons, some of which I’ll write about. Hopefully I’ll be able to complete certification soon, though.

And yeah, I know. Not just a poem, but a poem that makes me feel loved and understood every time I read it.

  7. Eman: EXCELLENT Spongebob reference!(Smacking myself on forhead – D’oh! Shoulda thought of that one.) :-D

  8. Yay! Sorry I didn’t comment yesterday – read and tweeted it though, so that counts for something right? I love my Friday mornings with J – it’s like we are sitting here drinking coffee and laughing together. :o) Absolutely adore everything! Landslide is one of my all time favorites as well, what cute kids! Oh the only thing I do not adore is your “eustachian tube dysfunction.” :o( That is not awesome, nor sparkly. I do hope the voodoo medicine regime worked?! (hopeful!) Loved both poems, I agree with Karen’s and I aspire to Robert’s. Thank you J! xoxoxoxo

    • All’s well. I wasn’t here to read your response until now either! But I love it, and definitely hope that one day soon we will drink coffee and laugh together. *adds to life list* ;-)

  9. Such lovely things, and Karen’s poem is just as lovely as you are!

    Caption:
    “There’s something on my mind…”

    • Ha! That caption made me laugh aloud. (In my very quiet house where Lexi and The Boy are still asleep.) Thank you, Estrella.

  10. I hope that if you did not get to go on your ocean scuba dives Saturday, that they at least let Chad and The Boy reschedule with you, too. Either way, I hope your ear’s better really soon, hon.

    1. “I have read (and adored, and bookmarked and printed out) the manifesto of encouragement from Danielle LaPorte.” Ditto!

    2. I hate the name of the book {goes back to my wild period in the eighties} HOWEVER, I LOVE Karen’s poem about you. If I were a boy, I’d feel the same way. I feel close to that even as a girl. And I AM older. ;-P

    3. I haven’t splashed in a puddle since my granddaughter and I played in puddles when she was three and a half ~ nine years ago. That’s going on my to-do list.

    4. LOVED the kids’ chorus ~ they made me smile.

    5. “I love, love, love McSweeney’s open letters. ‘Nuff said.” Yep!

This is SUCH a bad caption ~

Frog (to Snail): It’s safe for you to come down. Honest, when I said I wanted to give you a big squishy hug, I didn’t mean I’d really squish you!

    #jlove *Hugs* & *Kisses*

    • You’re so cute. Thank you times five!

You can only reschedule your dive for free for medical reasons, so Chad and The Boy did get certified. (So proud of them.) It means when I do my dive later (which I’m determined to do), it will be scarier because I’ll have to face my (somewhat unreasonable) fear without the people who normally talk me down. I’m wrapping my head around that… hoping determination will carry the day as it has most of my life. Cross your fingers! *hugs and kisses back*

  11. Hi J,
Karen’s poem is so touching. You are both so sparkily, and bring smiles to so many readers. What a kick to be the muse of a poem and see it in print!

Let's talk.
