TWW, Thanks. Add something new, or lose something that isn't working. Adapt, I guess. I think that might be the key to more happy, less stress. (It's a theory.)

Just looked at your blog. It's very cool. I'll be back.

It's hard to embrace tradition and evolve at the same time. I love holiday traditions... but it's good to be willing to add something new. Thanks for a great story. Happy holidays!

Oh, and me forgetting the pie would have caused a holy war. I would have been upset with myself and pouting, and John---being the wonder-hubby that he is---would have volunteered to go back and get it, and I would not have "let" him and we would have fought about it the entire time. (And, of course I am just using the distance between your house and your mom's, not our house and MY parents).

I love oreos!

So late to that party. Been busy decorating. Took me all week.

Christmas Eve dinner is at John's family's house. Sometimes we are there and sometimes we are not. We try to always be there but it depends on when the Holiday falls and who has what day off.

My family adjust "Christmas Dinner" to whenever John and I can make it. So, more often than not, our Christmases are different. Yet they are the same. Sometimes we don't make it up there. It really depends on work schedules. The year I had to work the day after Christmas, I am not sure we went up.

We just try to get up there in December and whenever we make it we call it Christmas. :-)

I like the idea of traditions, and I think it is GREAT when they can be kept, but I also really appreciate my mom and dad being so kind and flexible, makes John and I feel extra loved--the fresh-baked-cinnamon-sugary kind of loved.

Tina, Me too. Deep down, I am dying to rebel.

George, You are certainly a huge contributing factor to our collective sense of humor. I'm giggling at Scotty's song. I want a song. (I love how I'm picking up all these new "traditions" for myself.)

One of the things I love about coming here is that the comment train is as much fun to read as the posts. The collective sense of humor here could set back time.

Traditions do kinda morph as the years go by. some die-hard and touching ones remain tho. here's an example: We call my older brother in Texas every year on Christmas eve and sing him the Horses Ass song. Goes like this:

Here's to Scotty,
He's got class,
Here's to Scotty
He's a horse's ass!

Loads of fun, each year.

Cheers!

See? You have a good memory you'll talk about for years--when Chad went back all the way for that pie!!
I am of two minds about traditions--there IS a comfort in having them but deep down inside I want to rebel against the family "rules", too.

dh127, If I'd know Chad was going to be the hero of my post, I'd have written myself into the pie retriever role! ;-) I love your late night baking tradition. That's cool. With the right group, it could be very fun.

Love this post! TPM said it perfectly for me "I'm totally up for expanding the tradition." We always use my late mother's recipes and the stockings I made after my second grandchild was born, we always go to see the local ballet's production of The Nutcracker, we always get together at least once until late in the night baking for people in our lives who don't. But my daughter and I love to ADD new dishes, new ornaments & decorations, and new activities. I love that Chad went back for the pie!
