A post about homecomings (and robots and twitter and the White House and, oh yeah, that #&%*ing novel.)

I was musing about what to include in my “stuff that makes me smile” list this week, because, of course, not everything that makes me smile makes for a good blog post. But the most smiley thing of all does: my dad, who didn’t come home from the hospital last week when they originally said he would, did come home yesterday. Yay! (He is certainly smiling more.)

When they first told my mom he could come home (after having told her the day before that he’d stay at least through the weekend), I was worried that he was being released too soon. I was dubious about the decision and questioning everyone, and trying to be assertive, which doesn’t come all that naturally to me when I’m dealing with people in medical scrubs. (Or with professors. Or auto mechanics. Or people who are more than six inches taller than I am. Or people with briefcases. Or anyone with excessive eye liner. Or clowns.)

Anyway, eventually I noticed that for every sharp-toned question I asked, my father had something sweet or funny to say. (I think I should point out here that all my life, my father has been the cranky one. I’m the sweet and funny one.) The nurses laughed with him, joked back, avoided eye contact with me. They said they were going to miss him because he was a good patient, and I think they may have been telling him the truth. Mostly, I noticed how very, very much he wanted to go home.

So I settled the hell down. He seems to be doing fine. He’s definitely happier. My mom is relieved – the daily trip to the hospital hasn’t been easy, and I won’t miss that commute. So, plenty to smile about.

And more smiles!

Remember the amazing, wonderful, 24-second cute cuddly robot movie I made? I found this one, Internet Dating which I loved. (It’s less than a minute.) Oh, and that reminds me, I added the Twitter widget to my blog because I tweet things that make me smile all the time.

Also, every now and then, I cruise through the official White House photostream on Flickr, because a) I’m so happy Obama is our president and b) the candid shots of White House life and work fascinate me. I loved this shot of Sasha sneaking up on her father. Kids are kids wherever they live.

Finally, love this post from Fiction City, “How’s That Novel?” It’s the famous scene from Family Guy where Stewie questions Brian about his great unfinished work. I’m pretty sure you don’t have to be a writer to find it funny, but if you are a writer… ouch! (It’s good that we laugh at ourselves.)

I’m working on an art project based on your responses to Thursday’s post. Come back Monday to see!

You are just too stinking cute!

    Glad your dad is home.

    :0)

  3. Judy, So glad for you that your father is coming home and is in a cheery mood. The picture of Sasha is a classic. I’m miss being able to play like a kid – going to do something silly and playful tomorrow.

  4. Linda, I like “zippy Zebra sounds.” Very nice!

Karen, Yay! I debated on the Twitter widget. Thank you for commenting on it, one who has not-at-all misleading freckles.

Mairi, I think I’m going hiking tomorrow. That’s the playful pat. Maybe I’ll wear my groucho glasses and make it silly too!

  5. Great picture of President Obama’s little girl playing. I’m hoping he takes some stealth lessons from his daughter and does some similar sneaking up on Congress to get this country sorely needed health care reform.

Can you help a technology challenged old guy figure out how to get to the White House Photo Stream on Flicker? I’d like to see more.

  6. Kid, me too on health care reform. Here’s the link for the White House photostream. http://www.flickr.com/photos/whitehouse/

But, you can always get there from here. I’ve got it as a link under my “Why I Love the Interwebs” section. (And getting places through me is strongly encouraged!

  7. I’m very happy for your dad, I totally understand how he must felt being in the hospital and not in his home (I remember that out of the 3 weeks I spent in the hospital last year I only liked it the half day before having the surgery)! I can see you settled and didn’t cross a man who wants to get home already, it isn’t vise to do so! :)

I love the photo and video too, can’t wait to see your project tomorrow :)
    Have a great Sunday!

  8. As long as its all good your dad is home, I’m glad. (We’ve already talked about this so I won’t go on and on.)

But I forgot about your movie. Thank you for posting it again. And the dating one was funny. Thanks for the smiles.

  9. Estrella , Don’t cross a man who wants to get home… good advice!

Terre, I love the internet dating movie. I may have to try to top that…

  10. I guess I missed the news about your father having to be hospitilized, but am glad for you and your family that he is back home now.

That photo of the Oval Office is so sweet–made my morning. :-)

  11. Tina, I know! I find it wonderfully reassuring that Sasha sneaks up on her father who just happens to also be president.

  12. So glad to hear that your dad is doing better and back at home. Yeah!
Loved the photo of the president who is also just a dad and the daughter that is just another kid, albeit one with a nice white house.

  13. Oh, and duh to me because I thought you have had your tweets in the sidebar for a while… or was that your “Follow me on Twitter” link?? Which I wondered how you added? Did I dream that?
(I need to spice up my dreams a little)

  14. Jane, I did have a “follow me” link, it wasn’t a dream. (Whew! Your dreams are still okay!) I just did it with html in a text box before. Nothing fancy. But this is even easier – WordPress does all the hard lifting.

Let's talk.
