Hypocrisy and the toilet-flushing cat… seriously.

There’s something I don’t get. Maybe you can help me. I’m wondering at the raging hypocrisy of stupid politicians. And right off the bat, let me just say that stupid politicians sit on both sides of the aisle, and while the example I’m about to use is a Republican, I don’t think they have the corner on hypocrisy or stupid.

That said, Senator John Ensign, from Nevada, has publicly admitted to having an extramarital affair. For the purposes of this post, I’m not going to discuss the morality of that, or the degree to which a politician’s personal life should or should not be of concern to us. I am going to talk about the kind of senator John Ensign has been. Here are some facts:

  • Last year Senator Ensign, was rated the most conservative US senator by the national Journal magazine.
  • He and his wife, Darlene, were active for a time in Promise Keepers, a Christian evangelical ministry that promotes strong families and marriages.
  • He called for President Clinton’s resignation after the Monica Lewinsky affair.
  • He led the unsuccessful charge in 2007 to force Idaho Senator Larry Craig to resign from office after Craig was caught in a gay sex sting operation.
  • In 2004, in support of the Federal Marriage Amendment, Senator Ensign published a release titled “ENSIGN DEFENDS SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE ON SENATE FLOOR.

Right.

So here’s the thing. I’m starting to become doubtful. I think the louder a politician decries a thing, the more we should wonder about motive. And maybe, the more interested we should be in his/her personal life.

Oops. I forgot. I wasn’t going to get into that.

And now for something completely different (or maybe not so different, actually)… A friend posted this recently on Facebook, and I think it’s funny and kind of amazing. Watch this cat totally missing the point of water conservation! http://bit.ly/vrFRr

When we were kids, the rule was:
He who smelt it dealt it.

  2. Wow Judy,
You ran the gamut of subjects today. I’m just glad my post about videos of skateboarding kittens was up before yours or you might have thought I was talking about you!!!! (oooh four exclamation points!)
Enjoyed the kitty….hope they teach it to USE the facility so that his flushing will be useful.
It reminded me of the people who laugh when their toddler says a bad word, but then later…..try to get him to stop.
As far as politicians go, I’ve had my heart broken by a couple of the good ones. I’ve had the pleasure of working for a couple of the rare ones. People are stupid in all walks of life, you don’t HAVE to be in politics to make a fool of yourself, it just helps apparently.
And now I won’t be able to watch Jon for a week because this will be old news for me since you broke the story first………*sigh*

  3. i wholeheartedly agree. and it makes me sick – especially since the most hypocritical people never seem to suffer from their actions. they don’t lose their power, their status, or even their followers. i guess hypocrites are followed by hypocrites. maybe we need to change to a three party system: democrat, republican and hypocrite? or create a special hypocrite jail?

kid – i love it! thanks for finding the humor in this. and you’re right of course. we were all a lot smarter about these things when we were kids. hey, maybe we need kindergartners to rule the country? a national “nap and snack” platform does sound appealing. :-)

  4. Kid, That made me laugh aloud, loudly! Thank you!

Karen, True enough about stupidity. The thing about politicians being stupid is that it’s public, and therefore even more stupid. I actually was hoping Jon would talk about this last night. He’ll be funnier than I was whenever he gets to it. (Note: I have a big time crush on Jon Stewart. It’s not his tush though. He’s always sitting on that.)

jb, Ha! A National Nap and Snack platform sounds perfect! Everyone, just calm the hell down… there’s juice and cookies in it for you.

I’ve followed politics long enough to no longer be shocked by hypocritical politicians. But that doesn’t mean they irritate me any less.

On a different topic, did you see the footage of President Obama killing a fly during a CNBC interview? If not, there’s a video link attached to this Chicago Tribune story about it: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/sns-ap-us-obama-dead-fly,0,1023629.story

I always hated naps, but the snack time idea is appealing, as long as there are “just the right amount of stale” graham crackers.

  7. Not a coincidence you post about politics and a toilet.

  8. Wow, Terre’s post was perfection! I just wanted to thank you quickly for that post — I need to print it out and keep it in my pocket to soothe (sp?) myself the next time I hear a conservative lambasting Clinton for the millionth time or making some comment about gay couples.

  9. Craig, Obviously, PETA is missing the coolness of having a president that can swat a fly with his hand. He looked like Caine in Kung Fu!

Terre, Not a coincidence, you’re right!

Carey, Me too, a reminder, I mean. Actually I’m thinking a regular feature. Questioning the motivation of particularly self-righteous politicians. Stay tuned…

Let's talk.
